I've owned a lot of directories, and I can honestly say the most successful have been the ones that had a truly unique design that have completely gone away from the default template or free template.

@nick - I agree with you on this. I always look whether directory have custom design or not before submitting my site there.

@sasavtec - hey, thats nice design, are you going to use it on your directory or release it as free template?

Seems ill be getting it coded for the site, there are chances that ill release it for free as well.

I have seen some great looking directories that have super designs.... I guess this is a plug for Forplex but I love the way your directory looks and the whole setup.

Would anyone mind giving me a "ballpark figure" to have a custom template made? I'm sure it depends on how complex the design.

A custom design definitely says a lot about a directory. Some of the templates available are really good too, though. On one hand, it says something that the owner is invested enough to get a custom design and cares about the directory, etc. However, if the owner is on a more limited budget, I can certainly appreciate the funds from that being saved and spent on promotion instead, which will be of greater benefit for listed sites, and then use one of the high quality templates. I have sponsored quite a few of them. There are some really good ones available.

I decided a while back that custom design is really the only way to go. My favourite is my directory Submit4Backlinks.com, I also am pleased with the unique look of my newest directory directoryoffun.com. I just started my first indexu based directory and one of the reasons I was willing to give this script a try was their really nice looking templates they offer, you can see mine at totalXsearch.com. I will round things off with one of my own creations (I changed it around a bit from a tutorial I found) TotallyWebLinks.com

Custom design must gives a site unique look and makes different from the ordinary ones.

I also use custom design in my site(3wlink.com, designed by my friend), and now working hard to make a new design for my bid site (3wlead.com, my first design ) which will be up within next week.
