Why did you make a general web directory? - Talk Directories

Want to be frank and open in answering this Mike, i just had a feeling that it would be great if i too had a directory like many others, but only earning wasnt my intention from the start till today. I try to make my directory useful for a normal visitor than for just submitters and webmasters.. Still not upto my target, but will try to make the directory content rich and well organized.

Yes i was inspired and helped by my brother Amit who had also entered this field before me

And since then, working in the directory world has always been great..

An intersting question. For me it was a 100% business decission. I felt that by restricting myself to a neiche area that my ability to expand and grow the business would be limited to that neiche and the factors in it.

Becoming General allows me to explore any option i choose and in that not feel restricted or have additional costs in creating new neiches.

Yes i know 90+ % of people say that general is dead and that the way forward is a neiche directory, but i have made a living out of doing the opposite of the main stream and or doing what most say can't be done.

Time will tell.

Thats one major factor behind general web directories - more possible revenue. As a directory gains strength, PR etc it can attract many webmasters wanting to pay to be listed. Restriciting yourself to just a small niche can cut 90% or more of your possible submission revenue, although can be compensated by monetising the directory in other ways.

With my general directory I wanted to make it as useful a resource to as many visitors as I could and not restrict that to a particular niche.

Botman, do you feel that aiming at the mass market caused problems? Because you have so many possible visitors to cater for, dont you think that extra work involved has slowed you down and may be years before you can appeal to everyone?

To be honest, initially it was only money that the directory owners were making. not realizing the amount of time and money that is spent in the promotion & link building. So that is how I got started in the directory business But now I love the directory business.

Yeah, it seems the success of directories like bigweblinks, alive, aviva led many people to create them. Money is a big motivator. I do know many directory owners that do it for pleasure and are not fussed about the money.

For the first time when I made a directory it was just for fun, then later on I wanted to make money from it and building links for my own sites
