| The Bid directory is still a relatively new concept as far as directories go. This is the reason there are still very few organized approaches to using this innovative marketing tool. How to Spend Your Budget? There are many advantages to being listed #1 on the home page of bid directories. Some people believe home page links carry more credibility (trust rank) and they usually get indexed quicker than deeper links. Of course you also have access to the traffic being generated by the well promoted directories. With a limited budget you need to take advantage of every dollar to maximize the benefits. Some strategies will only save a dollar or two but when you bid in dozens of directories this can add up to a significant amount. #1 When to Get In? At first glance you would think that timing should not be a factor, and as long as you are willing to outbid the competition this is true. But if the directory is sorted by bid amount and then by list date, there can be an advantage to getting in early. If two bids are entered for the same amount, the earliest dated entry will be shown first. STRATEGY: Get in first with minimum bids, force your competitor to break new ground while you continue to match their bids and outrank them.

| 1. Supporting New Directories. New directories are inexpensive and home page links can often be obtained for as little as $1.00. These links often last for months until the bid directory establishes some credibility. In the mean time you can take advantage of the initial promotional traffic and receive increased exposure for your site. STRATEGY: Spread your budget over many low cost, home page links for the click through traffic -- often cheaper than PPC campaigns. 2. Upcoming Bid Directories. Upcoming directories have usually established some credibility through aggressive link building or visible page rank on inner categories. These links tend to be somewhat more expensive due to the increased traffic and perceived link value. The hidden page rank (between toolbar updates), and increasing traffic of well promoted sites are often overlooked by busy webmasters. STRATEGY: Take a moment to look at the link quality and traffic rank before making significant bids here. Less common categories tend to be very cheap where competition is less intense. 3. Established Market Leaders. Established leaders tend to be well promoted, very visible, and also have high page rank. These links tend to be very expensive and are defended vigorously, so be prepared for a bidding war if you plan on taking a home page link here. STRATEGY: Page two (category or alphabetic) links can often be purchased for a small percentage of the main page with only a minor reduction in page rank.

| Once you have selected a directory and even the page where you want your link there is still another decision to make. Where should you position your listing? 1. Top of the World. Holding the #1 position on a page will offer the the highest click through rates, but be prepared to defend your link. If the perceived value of the directory increases you may have to increase your bid to discourage competitors. STRATEGY: Take a #1 position and hold it, even in a few directories, as this increases your visibility as well as credibility. 2. Middle of the Road. After the first 3-5 bidders there is a often a gap where prices can drop dramatically. While traffic may be somewhat lower than the leaders you gain the same credibility and trust rank. You can often bid into this price break and obtain links at a significant discount from the page leaders. STRATEGY: Bid to the middle of the page. These links are less competitive and also tend to be less volatile. 3. Bottom of the Page. Remember all links on the same page receive the same link value (page rank) regardless of the position. The last link on a page also offers a cheaper entry, but it also includes significant risk. STRATEGY: Be prepared to monitor these links frequently as they could be bumped off the page with any new bid.
