You did mention the basics correctly.What you forgot to mention is the categories.Major directories do have a lot of category where they can accommodate adult sites and hence they are not considered spam.And as for the backlinks if you include your website URL (directory being the case here) in such a page where the PR is high,the topic must be good ,you get a back link.Once you obtain a PR of 3 at least and you start advertising it as a free submission directory where all submissions will be reviewed within a week at the most you start getting more traffic.And this helps your SERPs. There are lots more for a successful directory but that takes time.When you launch your own directory let us know.
