When you do as you say increase from $2 to $4 you have effectivley placed a false ceiling by $2 to evey bid placed, this costs you nothing.
Then what happens after your promo ends is that due to the nature of a bid directory where people bid to the top to be seen they are all paying an extra $2 to match the top listd price ( if they paid $2 they would be at the bottom ) so for every 50 bidders you make an extra $100.
For People to go on top they must add an extra $1 so this makes it $3 to bid extra and above, this now means you only need 33 people to make the extra $100
This then carries through with the life of the directory meaning every person following also pays the inflated fee, or scam.
It also gives a false impression to those coming along after the promo as to the popularity of the bid directory and also allows for a scam when sold by showing inflated prices.
